My name is Simon Hamlett, and I’m a concept artist based out of Savannah, GA. I have a BFA from Savannah College of Art and Design in Illustration with a concentration in concept design for animation and video games, as well as a concentration in Illustration for Entertainment. Additionally, I have a minor in painting. When words fail, images give me a voice that I have a hard time expressing through other mediums. Illustration is the way I tell stories and the way I communicate my ideas. My work is meant to transform thoughts into something more tangible, something that you can both see and experience. Growing up in a fairly small, somewhat conservative town in Virginia most certainly shaped the way I create, as there was always an inherent shock value to my work.
While other artists back home would draw and paint things like historical buildings and local flora and fauna, I was always drawn to darker subjects, likely a result of loving horror stories since I could remember. I like to work both digitally and traditionally, adapting to the way the world is changing while still keeping in touch with how I first fell in love with art. Ink and gouache are my favorites when it comes to traditional work, though I feel my ideas are best executed when I can take a mixed-media approach. While I like to incorporate aspects of both of these into my pieces, I also know when to pick my battles in order to illustrate my ideas. Recently, I’ve been able to explore my voice and how I use it, including how I select my mediums.
